refreshingly good

Three months in and any scepticism over the Chromebook genre is gone. Ideal for email, web surfing, internet shopping and ad hoc word processing and / or spreadsheet work, the combination of HP's hardware and ChromeOS takes some beating. Compared to MS Windows and to some extent OS/X, this is a very easy environment to live with. And there's the real benefit, this is a unobtrusive, low maintenance, low hassle-factor computer. In summary for the applications mentioned above Screen: 9/10 for colour representation, luminance, resolution, dropped a point due to screen finish / glossiness - personal preference only. Keyboard: 9/10 - well laid out, good feedback, tactile and responsiveness. Battery life: 10/10 - for the purpose intended, it's excellent & 8 hours of light use is perfectly possible. Spec: 10/10 - USB3, good screen resolution, 2Gb RAM and 16Gb flash is perfectly adequate for Chromebook. Compatibility with 5Ghz wifi is a nice touch given the potential for wifi clash in apartments and flats. Provision of 3G is the icing on the cake and swayed the original decision for me. Overall build: 10/10 - no chassis flex, good use of materials, appears to have a scuff-proof finis, feels solid and well built - excellent given the price. Overall physical format: good for home working but a little too large for use on trains and planes. 1.9Kg makes is a home/holiday laptop. Overall / summary: It's a Chromebook and potential users must first assess whether this is for them... if it is, then this device shouldn't disappoint.

Love it!

Fast, slick, robust. This feels light years ahead of our new desktop. I would certainly recommend this Chromebook to anyone.

It will change your view of computing forever

As a 40 year old CompSci graduate who has spent my entire adult life (and most of my teenage years) working with or around computers I have experienced lots of different computer hardware and software and until I unboxed my Chromebook 14 I thought I had seen it all. This absolutely fantastic little notebook has reinvigorated my love of IT and I have to admit it's turned me into somewhat of a Google fanboy. I've even got rid of my £3k desktop machine and dock my chromebook now instead. I love it and highly recommend it.

Love it and the 3g is a complete bonus.

Have been after a Chromebook for a while, having a HP laptop at work I thought I would give it a punt. Good battery life, now slouch on the speed front and does everything its meant to.......remember this is not windows! I have used the 3g a bit and it is fine, much better to view websites on than my tablet.

My third Chromebook and by far the best

I bought into the Chromebook concept two years ago and have never regretted it. Super fast start-up and no problems with viruses make owning one so easy compared with conventional laptops. The down-side that you need an internet connection is simply irrelevant. You can get online almost anywhere these days. The Google docs apps are just great and are being constantly updated so you always get the very newest version. They also don't cost you anything. The HP Chromebook 14 takes the Chromebook concept a big step forward. It's a lovely machine to use for both content creation and content consumption. The instant start-up beats my earlier Chromebooks by some distance and the screen is so good. My only quibble with Chromebooks is the complexity of printing. Unless you purchase a CloudPrint compatible printer you have got to connect via a traditional Windows machine.
